Smith County is located at the base of the Cumberland Plateau in Middle Tennessee and is geographically blessed with some of the most scenic vistas to be found in Tennessee. A comfortable drive from Nashville, Knoxville, or Chattanooga, the county hosts a panoramic view of the Cumberland River from the historic Cordell Hull Bridge. Smith County boasts a wide variety of business and industry. Its three major towns – Carthage, South Carthage, and Gordonsville – are each growing by leaps and bounds. Smith County received its 29th consecutive Governor’s Three Star Award in September of 2011. Smith County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population was 17,712. Its county seat is Carthage[1]. It was created in 1799 and is named for Daniel Smith (surveyor), a Revolutionary War veteran who made the first map of Tennessee and served as a United States Senator.
